Looking for Wonthaggi
All our stories reveal something about who we are and what we value. The twenty two stories you will hear today are no exception. Drawn from a hundred years of community life, they are an entertaining, often moving study of life in a small country town.
But there are other possibilities as well.
Our town is growing. Ask the steady stream of newcomers why they like Wonthaggi and they’re likely to say “It’s friendly!” Ask what else and they can’t tell you. Most of us, in fact, struggle to say it better.
But if we’re not clear about why we value our
town and it continues to grow and change, it’s likely that we’ll entirely lose what makes it different.
What makes Wonthaggi, Wonthaggi?
What should we fight to keep?
Keeping questions like these at the top of our
minds, today’s stories become a fascinating opportunity to think about what is best about our town, pay regard to those qualities and wear them
as a badge of honour.

Girls Can't Surf
Co-Presented by Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre & Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault
It’s the 1980s and the world of professional surfing is a circus of fluoro colours, peroxide hair and radical male egos.
GIRLS CAN’T SURF follows the journey of a band of renegade surfers who took on the male-dominated professional surfing world to achieve equality and change the sport forever.
Featuring surfing greats Jodie Cooper, Frieda Zamba, Pauline Menczer, Lisa Andersen, Pam Burridge, Wendy Botha, Layne Beachley and more, GIRLS CAN’T SURF is a wild ride of clashing personalities, sexism, adventure and heartbreak, with each woman fighting against the odds to make their dreams of competing a reality.
